Space/Materiality_ Project 2: Plaster Reflection

 Plaster Reflection

When I first started this project, I did not know what plaster was. I only used the paper mâché in primary school. Using what we have learned previous project, parabolic curve, cutting and scraping out foam boards was not easy. I have always drawn on paper or other materials, but I had to think how I am going to make a 2-D object into a 3-D that will work out and that I imagine in my mind. Similar the previous project, I had a problem and difficult time creating  3-D object that I wanted it to be. I did not know how much I had to space each lines out, and where to cut the foam board. I had no clue, how the drawing will turn out when I create into a 3-D object, so I took the large foam card board and cut into interesting shapes. After that, I implied parabolic curve, spaced them 1/2 inches, and cut each lines in order for them to be flexible. I was satisfied how the foam boards came out.

For the second one, I created another object that involved a curve, because the first piece had a curve. I wanted the two pieces look like a unified piece.

After, I went to the wetlab, and had started to put plaster on top the foam board. Because we put plaster on top of the foam board, the actual piece sort of looks different in shape and size, but there was no much of a difference.

After the plaster got hard and solid, I used the scraper to smooth the plaster out, and make the object like a finished piece. Then, I used a small dowel to connect the two pieces, and used small bits of toothpicks in order for the pieces that I connected to stay in place.

Overall, I am satisfied with the whole outcome and the project. Learning new materials and using how to use plaster was interesting. I did not know that we could use parabolic curve in most of the 3-D object to create an artwork. Even though I was struggling in the beginning, the mistakes and the process really helped me improve. In some way, the final piece looks like an architecture piece, because of the closed space, and the hollowness in the middle.
