Dress Project_ Creative Technical Studio 1

Narrative:

I chose the painting, Nude (Study) – Sad Young Man On a Train, by Marcel Duchamp. The painting involves two movements, a sad man on a train and a motion of train passing by. I choose this painting, because the lines the image is extremely structural and contains rough and rigid lines; however, this painting is about movement about a man and a train in motion. The contrasting theme and idea of the painting how the image is visually solid and rigid, but the meaning of the study is about movement and motion was interesting.

The first image that I thought of when I saw this painting was a tree. The painting looks like the rough barks that lifted from the trunk and are about to fall off. From inspiration of a tree bark and the creases on the tree, I decided to use folding techniques

I used pleats to create the vertical lines, because the shape of pleats are structural and contains rigid lines, but also, pleats are in repetition, which is similar to the painting. Because the meaning of this painting contains “movement”, I incorporated the meaning by putting a diagonal line pleats on the front of the dress, which gives a flow and “movement”.

The color scheme for this project is brown, so I used two different shades of brown for this project.
