Response: Liz Well’s Fashion Photography

Liz Well’s book Photography makes a clear point that it is all in the photo, and it is not about the photographer. Gentrification is not the easiest topic we can publicly talk about but fashion photography allows us to express feminism through the photos. “The scopophilic gaze that Sherman interrogates in order to comment on women’s oppression and female sexuality loses some of its critical power when entwined with notions of desire that are bound up with the consumption of commodities.” The Face of Fashion by Craik mentions how other commercial photographs try to hide the relations of production, McRobbie emphasized that it is the opposite for fashion photography. She interviewed fashion students from Asia and black nation countries and found out that it is iconic because their families are engaged in the production. They found pleasure and enjoyment.  As an Asian fashion marketing student, I agree because I believe that there a strong appeal of production is needed in fashion photography – although I believe that advertising no longer does its “job” but instead it give more attention to the brands.
