Diptych statement:

  • My panel on the left represents my present life and the panel on the right represents the future life of myself.
  • On the left panel, I draw a little tree without any leaves which symbolizes myself because this is my first year at Parsons, and there are much more skills and techniques waiting for me to learn. However, I think that I have the potential energy and lots of interesting perspectives on fashion and design, so I draw a huge chunk of tree roots beneath the tiny tree in order to represent there are enormous ideas and perspectives inside of me. Although I’m a tiny “tree” without any leaves at this time, I believe I have the ability to learn and grow into a big tree. On the right panel, I draw a big tree on the top of a building to represents the future of myself, I would like to become a strategic designer and works for different companies. I was a tiny “tree” on the left panel, but I will become a huge “tree” in the future and spreading out my ideas and what I believe to the audience.
  • I chose to express my feeling through drawing trees because, in my opinion, trees can deeply represent the life of a person. On the left panel, there is only a single tree which I want to express the loneliness in part of my life because this is my first year at Parsons. I also want to express my passion and knowledge for fashion and design through drawing the enormous tree roots. On the right panel, the tiny tree has grown into a big tree with thousands of leaves, here I want to express the excitement of reaching my dream in the future. These two panels definitely express two different emotions, the first one is about loneliness and the second one is about excitement. They actually address the progress of growing deeper in my life.
  • When I read about this assignment, I saw the word “contrast”, which means a clear distinction between the two panels. Then I thought about what have I experienced nowadays, and what will happen in the future. I feel like there is a strong comparison between these thoughts so I decided to draw them down. I chose trees to represent myself is because I feel like the life of a tree has similarities with the life of a human. We were little when we were born just like saplings, but we grow and we learn in order to become who we want to be. Trees are considered representative of life, wisdom, power, and prosperity. I hope I will grow like a big “tree” in the future. I use lots of repetitions, sequences, and proportion in these two panels. I use lots of lines for the tree roots and buildings. I think my mark making grids helped a little bit for this work because I got to know there are different ways of drawing lines and shapes. I haven’t find artwork that inspires me but I hope I can find some in the future.

Overall Reflection:

  • I thought these two projects were interesting and it helped me to understand how to embed principles of design and elements of design into my artwork. Mark Making project really get me to think about how to use lines and shapes to express my feelings, I never thought about that before so it was kind of hard for me at the beginning. I felt more excited when I saw other people’s works because they helped me to develop more creative ideas. Diptych project helped me on how to make a comparison between two panels, and I really enjoyed drawing in this process. I felt like diptych is an interesting way to express feelings and emotions, and we can see the connections between two panels. Overall, I think these two projects were fun and I’m looking for more interesting things in the future.
