BRIDGE 3: NY Experience

The Greenwich Village

For this project, my group chose the Greenwich Village neighborhood in the lower Manhattan, New York City. The reason that we chose this area is that it’s not only where our school is located, but also a familiar place that we knew. In this project, we decided to show one of the most famous landmarks in Greenwich Village, Washington Square Park. We did lots of research before we started filming and we found lots of background information about Washington Square Park.

Here are our scripts:

We’re students from The New School, today we are going to explore the neighborhood where our school is located; The Greenwich Village. As we all know Washington Square Park is one of the most famous places in the neighborhood. How much do you know about this place?

Washington Square Park is a historic landmark in the Greenwich Village. It remained farmland until April 1797, when the Common Council of New York purchased the fields to the east of the Minetta for a public burial ground. In the 19th century, New York went through yellow fever diseases. However, Washington square park did not include in the New York City limits yet. Therefore, most of those who died from yellow fever were buried here, safely away from town, as a hygienic measure. The cemetery was closed in 1825. Even today, there are more than 20,000 bodies rest under Washington Square. Excavations have found tombstones under the park dating as far back as 1799.

Overall, I think this project was a really interesting experience because it helps us to get to know more about the area that we live in. I was also excited when we got to film in different locations in Greenwich Village, and exchanges ideas with each other. I really enjoyed the process of communicating with my group members. I hope that everyone had a fascinating experience too.
