The World of Anna Sui

Anna Sui meets the Mod Archetype

Anna Sui Illustrations – FW13 (https://www.vogue.com/article/anna-sui-book-by-tim-blanks-photos)

As evident from Sui’s inspirations and research, the overarching theme of the illustrated outfits is silhouettes and color palettes inspired by the 1960’s. All outfit lengths are above the knee, have long or three-quarter sleeves, have somewhat higher necks and they all utilize some type of stocking that is either knee length or full length. However, each one of them follows a different color palette, a different mix of patterns, and different forms of layering.

I as a designer am particularly fascinated by the silhouettes of the upper class 18th century (referenced in images), so if I were to design a collection, I would focus my inspiration on that. However, despite my awareness that such silhouettes were mostly prominent in Europe and specifically France, I aim to embody a reference to Arab and mainly Palestinian cultures (referenced in images). As a Palestinian myself, witnessing the erasure and colonization of my people encourages me to make sure I use my designs to increase society’s awareness of our culture and the beauty that comes with it.
