“Maker”

There are everchanging ways in which I approach my work, I might decide on a new way to draft my patterns, have new inclinations towards different fabrics, evolving inspirations. What stays constant in my work, at my core as a ‘maker’, as some would say, are the principles that that envelope my work as well as my experiences in my work. Working in a sustainable manner that has a positive impact on my environment is something that I keep close to my heart and will undoubtedly be showcased in my work, be it in the process or the product. What makes creative work so invigorating is that it can never really be truly replicated; due to the experiences of the ‘maker’. I am no different, there are facets to my person that no one on the planet will be able to wholly emobody. My interpretations and experiences are my own; growing up mixed race, queer in South-east Asia, moving to England at a tender age; my memories from them, my travels, moving to America etc. Who am I as a ‘maker’? I am a ‘maker’ whose own is used to showcase and adorn their experiences while also during the ‘makes’ to undercover about themselves.

Ghosted

For this project, I took what was plenty avaliable to me; towels and bed linens. Instead of sketching on paper what a design would be straightaway from head to paper, I wanted to create a mood, my own inspiration so to say. As seen from the images above, I arranged pillows on the floor, pulled the bedsheet out to the floor and draped myself with the duvet. Before that however, as seen in the first image, I used towels to create a ‘garment’ on myself , something that I would drape on a mannequin should the word ‘ghost’ be used as a starting point. The images that I created on the floor of my hotel room with a self-timer were actually quite brilliant. I then used those images to start creating a garment on the mannequin. I had towels and bathrobes at my disposal. As with the last project, I would LOVE to translate this into a look with fabrics that aren’t towel-like.
