Field trip to SoHo

This is the honed blue stone used in the out side of a resident building in SOHO area,  the blue stone only produce in Pennsylvania, U.S, the left side blue stone is cleft cut, and the right side is honed. Blue stone has a very interesting characteristic which is the color will be change while you change the shape of the stone.

The second building that we see is another resident building, this building was designed by Herzog & De Meuron, which is a Switzerland design company, the green tube were made of glass, this idea is so unique, the color is green in daytime because of the sun but at the night time, the color will turn to black such two different feelings. On the lower level, there are some sliver color patterns which are made by aluminum, it was hot melting and casted to particular shape. And for the wall, there are shapes on it which is pressed by machine.

This “wall” is a natural rust cortex steel wall, the natural rust is actually protection of the steel, I never thought about this can be building material, it color turns out really cool, full of industrial style.

It is also a resident building, the wall is rush cut stone by bush hammer

the Red color tube actually was made by terracottas, glazed and fired

This building’s out wall was made by brick, the arrangement of brick actually create to a form, it made the wall has 3D shape, not being boring.

It is one of the Aesop story that we went, the designer used NewYork Times newspaper made the wall, The newspapers were stacked, torn and bound in a wooden frame then topped with sheets of powder-coated aluminium. Since Aesop is a skincare brand, and paper is soft like skin to match the concept of the story, how material naturally change by time and how material makes people feels.

It is the out side of The New Museum, material used by aluminum, expand aluminum mesh.

lastly, we went to a hotel lobby, the color was made by color added concrete, it doesn’t really look like concrete, and there are panel soft materials on the wall to reduce the cold feeling from concrete floor.
