Fashion Collection Analysis (Jean Paul Gaultier Spring 2013 Ready To Wear)

The Show started with a dark blue background lighting with cast shadows of a construction site. As some slow rock and roll music start to play, the shadow in the middle slowly but surely walked down the runway. With the lighting move towards her, the glittery runway started to show. These are the looks that were especially interesting and caught my eyes.

This is an african female dressed in a black jumpsuit with very structured satin-looking neckline. The pant part of the jumpsuit is straight and wide. Under that, there were black T-strap heels. She is wearing a small square hat on her head and a pair of big sunglasses. Her lips are painted dark grey. On her wrists, there are some black graphic-shaped bracelets. But most importantly, she has an un-lit cigarette on her left hand which she pretended to smoke from.

This girl walked out as the lighting changed to hot pink with disco beats. She has messy blonde hair and red lips. She has big and small fishnets all over her outfit with huge hoop earrings.

This Asian girl walks down with loose shirt and floral printed pants. The color consists of cherry red, lime green, cream with a solid black background. She has heavy makeup on. Dark defined brows, red winged eyeshadow, contoured with pink blush and red lips. Her hair was permed under a men’s hat.

She walks in all denim. A straight cut button up dress with a sequins-all-over jacket. Her hair was straight and let down. Her makeup is soft with taupe-toned eyeshadow, neutral lips and false lower lashes.

She appears in a fitted black leather biker jacket, underneath which is a set of red satin lingerie. She’s wearing white suit pants that matches her single handed glove. Her hair was tied up in small curls covering half of her face.

3 Questions:

  1. Who are the designer portraying?

2. What years is the designer throwing back to?

3. What are the symbolic colors of that decade?

Final Writing:

This show definitely introduced a strong personality and a constant change. The dark background with scaffolding gives the room a mysterious breath until the glitters on the floor turned it into a rock concert. The show started with more masculine shapes and femininity has always appeared.  As the show goes on, an increasing number of iconic figures appeared. “Madonna” appeared in her true colors with everything exactly Madonna. However, lots of other icons were modified to the extend where the silhouette feels extremely familiar but the look is very different. That’s how Gaultier has incorporated those 80s elements. 80s is when the pop culture has truly expanded. Where people has first started to explore different takes on genders. And pop stars has been nothing but a huge help to that issue. I believe Gaultier is throwing back and celebrating the start of gender-equality, human rights and feminism, as well as tribute to those icons for forming the fashion world as how it is now.
