Studio Final Project

Thesis statement:“Although NYFW is taking pride in being the most diverse fashion week yet, women of color are not being adequately represented in fashion shows in United States. Discriminatory treatment towards models unquestionably manifest the supposedly creative high-fashion industry as a myopic and narrow-minded world.”

Artist statement:

My research topic is about diversity in the modeling industry. I started with concluding datas shown on the Fall 2017 New York Fashion Week runway including most booked models, most and least diverse shows and the overall diversity rate. After exploring the history on this topic, I came up with my thesis statement. After learning about the facts, I wondered what the impact would be when it comes down to individual models. Therefore in this project, I am doing a “documentary” featuring models of color telling their very own story and point of view on this topic

Brain storm in class. I was going to interview models face to face. However, they all have a busy schedule so I decided that it’ll be easier to interview them throw email.

I looked for my primary sources on instagram since nowadays every model are “required” to have one. I focused on models of color, and other pages that is related. I get about a 5% respond rate.

My Creative Brief

Below are the content I emailed them

Hi xxx!

I’m thrilled that you gave me the opportunity to interview you. I am trying to explore individual model’s stories and point of view when it comes to underrepresentation of models of color on the runway.
Please type or record your answers (prefered!) to the following questions. I would appreciate it if you could reply within a week since I do have a deadline for this as a final.
Note that you can skip any questions you are not comfortable with and I sincerely apologize for anything that might be offensive 🙂
Q1: Would you like to remain anonymous? (the project will be viewed by several professors and students at Parsons School of Design)
Q2: Can I use any of your modeling photos including runway and ad campaigns?
Q3: Attached are some infographics I have made on this topic based on Fall 2017 NYFW. Do you think they fairly represent the situation? Or what do you think of them?
Q4: During castings, is there any discrimination towards models of color?(you or other models that you know)
Q5: Have you or other models that you know ever failed to book a job because of your ethnicity?
Q6: While doing hair and makeup, were there times when the stylist didn’t know how to do your hair? Make-up artist doesn’t have the foundation that matches you?
Q7: Looking back to runway in the 70s-00s, do you feel that caucasian models dominant the industry?
Q8: What about now? Is there any improvements? If so, Are those improvements enough?
Q9: What does having models of color on the runway mean for you?
Q10: Some designer hired/have been hiring all white models for their runway shows. What do you think about that? (Do you think it’s understandable because it’s the designer’s idea of the collection? Or else?)
Q11: Please feel free to talk about as many experiences or stories on this topic as you wish. I really want to know your point of view 🙂
Thank you again for working with me. I really appreciate it!! Have a great day and good luck!
Best,
Lily
