week 10

2)

After hearing Tattfoo speaking, I am impressed by his personality. To be more specific, he, unlike many other artists, is able to find the balance between creating what others want and what he wants to present to his customers. In this materialistic world, people blindly focus on earning more money. As a result, many lose their initial passion that has inspired them. So, I am really impressed that he is able to maintain his original passion for art, and not be controlled by others’ demands.

Similarly to our class, Tattfoo is creating a product as well. However, while our class focuses on the idea of creating physical products, Tattfoo creates a product that more about to human mental health, and unique lifestyle

3) As the result shown on New York City’s Hurricane Preparation website, I live within Zone 5. The knowledge of the hurricane evacuation zone can help me to make a more reasonable emergency plan when things happen. It serves as an useful guideline for people to make plans and take action. The next, nearest zone to my home is Zone 6. It is a W 12 St distance from my home to the Zone 6. Parsons is located within Zone 6. With accurate emergency information and effective evacuation measures, I feel prepared for a hurricane in NYC.

The design of the Hurricane Preparation website is useful for people to find information. On the one hand, the UI design of the website complies with the rule of simplicity and clarity. By offering a clear introduction of KNOW YOUR ZONE in the first part, people can quickly understand the function of the website. Following the title are six parts, Find Your Zone, Know the Hazards, Stay Informed, Make a Plan, Be Ready New York, Show Your Zone, which provide different functions for people. The next part is information about flood zones, highlighting the differences between flood zones and hurricane evacuation zones. The last part displays the questions that are possibly asked and helps people to figure out possible solutions. The UI design with clear function divisions is easy for people to find necessary information. On the other hand, the color employed by the website — red, orange, yellow, green and blue — is in agreement with the standard of hurricane scale. Not only does it demonstrate the aesthetic function, but also it increases the awareness of people in coping with hurricane emergencies.

4)

Infrastructural and urban resiliency focuses on the physical infrastructure of a city, addressing the rebuilding ability of basic infrastructure and urban constructions. Social resiliency emphasizes the social infrastructure, mainly referring to the relationships among neighborhood. Social infrastructure is defined as a system of strong and weak ties.

Social resiliency is the level of trust among friends and family members. A high level of trust makes strong ties and a low level of trust makes weak ties among people. Strong ties, in agreement with the previously referred, can be developed by mutual trust and confidence while weak ties can be influenced by distance and interaction.

As the report shows, families and communities rather than government are the most helpful sources of assistance and support when people are faced with emergencies and destruction. Climate change is a big issue in contemporary age. The influences and severity of natural or human-made disasters can hardly be accurately estimated under the complicated environment. The support of government can not guarantee everything and unexpected accidents can not be avoided. As such, the importance of mutual trust and dependence in society is reflected. Social resilience plays the major role in the preparation for emergencies in the context of climate change.

There is no doubt that resiliency should be taken into consideration in the work of artists/designers. Resiliency is highlighted in many areas, including urban development, treatment facilities, etc. Resiliency is highly advocated in many cities to push the development of Smart Cities. It is vital that artists/designers incorporate resiliency in daily work, which will promote the foresightedness and comprehensiveness of planning.

Social resilience helps me to prepare for an earthquake. When the crisis happened, the support from neighborhood and family member helps people keep mind and thus make right decisions. The reciprocal cooperation is a\ great power in times of crises.

Social resilience is a significant factor in the development of cities. It is not a new topic and had been listed on the agenda of global sustainable development in 2015. Creative people can find innovative approaches to expound on social resilience, which will provide impetus and safety for future.

5)

According to the research, the temperature of New York City will continuously increase in the thirty years due to the greenhouse gas emission. Sea level will possibly rise by 15 to 25 inches in 2050. The result shown on Exploredia reads that the population of New York City will rise from 8500 thousands in 2019 to 24770 thousands in 2050. Clean energy will be highly advocated and infrastructure will be more embodied with the function of energy storage. In order to deal with climate change, floating house will become a new model of urban architecture. The climate change is a big issue for people all over the world. The predictions of scientists on New York City reveal the general trend of the urban development. Climate change will be the top issue in environmental remediation and innovative approaches will be given to combat the vulnerabilities of urban facilities. To make a coastal city with more resilience, physical infrastructure should be combined with new energy technology. Moreover, strong ties require to be built among communities. Last but not least, the system of emergency management should be completed and updated with realities.
