Time: Frame – Einstein’s Dreams Triptych

14 May 1905

In this chapter, there exists a center of time. And at this center of time, time stands still. Everything that is usually in motion is suspended in space and frozen in place. However, from this center, there exists concentric circles of time that extend outward from the center. Time picks up speed the further the sequentially increasing circles are from the center. Consequently, the most outer circle holds the outer world where time is at a normal pace.

To visually display this concept of time, I used a progression from the first panel with only text to the last panel with text and image. The first panel uses the typography principles of tracking and leading in radial formation. The center of the circles, of the center of time, has the most spacing between the letters of the word “still,” (tracking) and also has the furthest space between the next circle encompassing it. As the circles enlarge, the spacing between both the letters and the lines of text get smaller until the largest circle, which represents normal time. The wire circles in the center show the constricting nature at the center of time. The second panel shows the beginning of an image of water in a circular form that is frozen in time. This represents the center of time, and the gold silver and lighter blue show the faster speed of time outside of the center. The last panel incorporates words and image. The inside of the water formation is the darkest, representing the phrase “light is diminished almost to nothing at the center” (Lightman p 29). The text in this last panel follow the paths of the veins in the gold leaves that are on the corners of the page and represent the portions of the chapter that are represented in these two panels.  The reflective material on the bottom panels and the overall reflective theme is to represent the imaginative and distant concept of time standing still. As a whole, the panels are put in this formation because the top panel of text tells of the concept that is displayed in the bottom panels. Also the bottom panels purposely connect the image of water.
