In my map, the Washington Square Park is in a rectangular shape, and many high buildings surround it. The entrance of Washington Square Park is the Washington Square arch, and the central is the Washington Square fountain. On the left bottom, there has a large dog play area. Otherwise, there are many trees inside it and paths for people walking. The Washington Square Park is enclosed by many buildings, so it highlights the importance of a park. It’s a place for people hanging out and a tree lawn for embellishing the neighborhood. So it can show that how Washington Square Park benefits the region. I most curious about the dog play area and Washington Square arch, so I drew the both of them. This map directly shows the purpose and the influence of the Washington Square Park, so it relates to my central question about how it can benefit the neighborhood.

Final Research Paper

Washington Square Park, Where Art, Nature and Fun Come Together

Artist Statements

As I went to the Parsons, I saw many wonderful artworks and many classmates and friends’ artworks inspire me a lot. From watching others’ works, visiting many galleries and doing researches, I found out that I am interested in the minimalism art and my favorite artist is Dan Flavin and Carl Andre. They were minimalism artists in 20 century. I create my design because I did research and choose the Washington Square Park to be my site to study. From visiting the site, I saw many people having picnic and enjoy the sunshine on the grass in the Washington Square Park, so I decided to make a picnic bag for the people who tend to have picnic in the Washington Square Park.

The main elements in the Washington Square Park, such as the Washington Square Arch and fountain become the main elements in my design. I choose the shape and the color of these elements. Because of the minimalism, I only use the simple lines to show the shape of the different elements. From watching my design, I want people to feel a sense of future and relaxing. It’s a convenient bag for people using for their picnic. The material of the bag is also thoughtful, because all the material are easy to wash, so people do not need to dirt the bag. I want my design to make people’s life more convenience and joyful.

  • Hi Claire – nice work so far on this research post.

Regarding your central research question, I recommend refining it to: How does Washington Square Park benefit the neighborhood?

For the draft of your thesis statement, it is somewhat obvious in nature. People hang out in most parks and enjoy life when doing so. So, when revising your thesis statement, make it less obvious and more specific to the park. What benefits does this part, in particular, bring to the neighborhood? Going to the park and observing will help.

    Keep going!

  • Hi Claire – nice work on your annotated bibliography. You include a diverse range of sources that will hopefully provide you with a lot of information about the different elements of your thesis statement.

For your thesis statement, I encourage you to be a bit more specific with the first phrase: “various events.” What kind of events are you referring to? Many events take place in the park, so try to edit that phrase and narrow down what kind of events you would like to focus on in your research paper.
