ART SCHOOL- BLOG POST SEMINAR

Why don’t art schools get enough credit? When someone finds out I draw they all say the same thing, “Wow you’re lucky you can draw” as if I didn’t put in any work. All skills take practice even those that are not art related. And yet, we are seen as not going to a “real” college if we are going to art school. A majority of people have no idea about any art schools but everyone knows all the purely academic colleges, why is that? “Oh its easy though cause you’re going to art school”, why is art school seen as “easy”, we put in so much effort into our work but its not considered to be equivalent to hours of studying at a academic based college. Art school costs just as much as any other school and even more when you add in art supplies. But at the end of school, if we are lucky we can have the job of our dreams but for most we struggle to do so. Artists tend to gravitate towards working alone but for the most part have to be placed in a collaborative environment in order to sustain themselves. I am just hoping one day it’ll all be worth it.

When it comes to design, can it really be taught? We are all born with different minds and thus have different ideas. Can we be taught how to think or to come up with ideas? If we are taught to think then will we have the same thoughts? What makes them creative and unique ideas is that we thought of them all by ourselves because no one thinks exactly how we do. We may be taught how to obtain information in order to create and develop a concept but it is up to us to create an original idea. Someone told me the other day we just go to school for the brand name and I realized how true that statement was. Can we really be taught to be in the art industry or do we merely go to art school for the brand name in order to make connections and in turn get a job?
