Part 1 – Environmental Portrait

For Part 1, I decided to choose the idea of making a necklace out of recycled materials such as toilet roll, wire, plastic wraps for threads and threads. The reason of choosing these materials was to present the idea of sustainable fashion which refers to Michele’s interests. I chose to reproduce a necklace that is owned by her to present her style and her fashion in order to complete the environmental portrait. I chose to cut the toilet roll in many different loops so I could use those to attach it to each other to create a pattern for the centre of the necklace. I took the thread, braided and made a different kind of pattern. I chose two styles for the thread to enhance the idea of Mexican culture and Mexico where Michelle has been brought up. The purpose of using these various different coloured thread was to portray Michelle’s craziness and her personality. As she is jolly, happy and wild, it can be presented through the colourful strings.

After the critics, the feedback that I received was strongly helpful. The classmates in my class noticed that this necklace may not be worn by anyone as its materials are recyclable but not wearable. The wire can be dangerous and hence, making it sharp and risky for those who would wear this. Also, they noticed that the toilet roll cutouts are minimalistic and have no colours which can make it less attractive and less desirable. Moreover, theyfeel that adding another accessory can complete the frame.

To improve on this feedback, I think I should plan on improving this necklace and adding another accessory. Or, producing two new accessories such as maybe a Mexican jacket and a bracelet. These could involve a lot of colours to present Michelle’s personality and it can be made with recyclable materials such as newspaper, bottles, plastic wrap and many other materials.
