Research Story

The project I am choosing to re-document is the dream movie I created with a group last semester. For this assignment, we were told to create a short film based on the concept of dreams. The rest was up to us. The idea my group and I came up with was two images of me – one good and one bad – with the bad chasing the good until he caught up, showing realization of anxiety and fear.

One challenge we had to work with was filming in a public space. This was challenging because we had to be concerned about our environment and the people around us with what we were filming. This also ties into the research we had done before shooting of where we could shoot certain scenes.

This was definitely our biggest challenge, but in the end we were able to work with it and produce a final video.

One idea that we played with was using a body cam to give a realistic/creepy effect. We were able to do this after brainstorming for a while and deciding that we could use a makeshift body harness and a go-pro.

This project made me move “outside” of myself in a few different ways. First, I had to forget any social mores in what I was doing, since we had to get the clips that we had decided on, and many of these included me doing things like running alone in circles or otherwise acting strange. Also, we had to think on our feet all the time since we were under a strict deadline. Processes like the body cam and deciding where to film come to mind. Overall, I think this project really helped me with being invested with my work, working on my feet, and producing a full finished product.
