THE UNITED NATIONS?

Surfacing from a white backdrop, are zones that appear and develop in grey scale to form the map of the world, as it would be, if it only contained the countries and territories members of the United Nations. From the beginning of civilization, divides have formed along ethnic, political, territorial and historical lines, which have separated people more each day from a common cultural foundation and have often been the cause of tension, conflict and even war among nations. There is a tendency to look at the world from the points that divide us, but what if we consider everything we have accomplished when we have united?

“The United Nations?” is a video installation that utilizes a 2D animation rendered in Processing, to show the creation of the United Nations in chronological order from 1945 to the present. The UN is an international organization that was founded in 1945, after the Second World War, to help maintain international peace and security. Today, although there are 193 member States (more than ever before), there is still a total of 54 countries or territories that have either not joined or have not yet been recognized.
