GLAM ROCK VISUAL ESSAY + REFLECTIVE TEXT

GLAM ROCK VISUAL ESSAY PDF

I believe my topic really relies as heavily on visuals as it does text. You can describe the clothing and visage, but that only gets you so far. Seeing it, is another thing completely. You’re immediately transported back in time. The sensations that arises from looking at an actual photograph of another era in time can be such a visceral experience. I like to think that the images I selected and edited do a nice job of portraying what I envision when I am researching my topic. My repetitive use of underlays/overlays and the female/male symbols as accents in the images are reflective of the bending of genders in Glam Rock, as well as in punk in the 1970’s. Another choice I made in editing was the ever-famous Bowie bolt, which I feel encompasses the essence of the era wholly. I see the New York Dolls with their wigs and lipstick. I see Suzi Quatro and Joan Jett, chilling with their shaggy mullet-esque hair. To me, the topic of gender in association with the 1970’s Glam Rock scene can be decently represented by the photos I selected. While the masculinity embraced by the women, and the femininity of the men can be heard in the music, those visuals to take it to another level.
