Sense & Nonsense: Toufic & Raad

Sense:

“In her time off, and as an amateur painter, Hassan painted hundreds of small watercolors of the plumes of smoke, debris, and fire produced by the missiles she tracked. Moreover, and consistently over her twenty-five-year career, she sent the paintings as thank-you gifts to the officers and enlisted men and women who served with her. While some reprimanded her for her insensitivity and others commended her for her formal mastery, few turned down Hassan’s painted gifts.”

The first phrase interested me a lot, “In her time off, and as an amateur painter”. After meeting with someone who had a career in the Fashion Industry I was able to get some great advice on how to create things that I would want to see in a garment. After, that meeting I dedicated every Saturday to making new sketches, ideas, and designs.

Nonsense:

But in the lower right-hand corner there’s a small, barely discernible, bleached-out black-and-white image of people posing for a group portrait. That image, despite its size, comes off as a rasp of reality at odds with the work as a whole. There are also catalogue numbers, presumably assigned by The Atlas Group, printed beside the upper right corner of the small image as well as the lower right corner of the large monochromatic field.

I wonder what message he wanted to show by using the small frame to place an image like that. I think it is creative because the audience is now forced to step or take a closer look at the picture and then visualize everything as a whole.

Nonsense:

I can imitate myself, “repeat” myself, but as a filmmaker I can not do so even if I wished since my previous work is no longer available—I have to resurrect it before being able to “repeat” myself.

I immediately reacted differently and was curious to know why he would use the word, “resurrect”. I see this phrase used a lot in church and in the Bible so I was interested in seeing how he used this word in his own style.

Sense:

It is often the case that the thinker, writer, videomaker, filmmaker, artist or religious figure attempting to resurrect pre-surpassing-disaster tradition feels that he or she failed to accomplish such an incredible task. But while he or she may be the best judge as to whether there has been a withdrawal, he or she often proves not to be a good judge as to whether the resurrection succeeded or not.

Seeing the word, “resurrect used again in a different text helped me to clarify. I think the word was used to show, bringing back life and to be able to reproduce something again; to make something new.
