The Nature of Things Design Challenge

Part 1:

1.Prosthetic Leg Prototype (right) 2014

I choose it Because I think this technology provides a lot of convenience for a lot of patients who need it. Without the help of any professional doctor, 3D scanning technology can be used to scan the other leg to create a prosthetic that is very close to the user’s own shape, which is very convenient and personalized

2. Personal Food Computer, 2018-ongoing

I like the personal food computer, because in my hometown Tibet, a lot of vegetation can’t survive because of climate constraints. For example, in my grandmother’s garden, we tried to grow some hibiscus flowers and some melon vegetables but none of them survived due to the weather. However, the MIT personal food computer uses robotic systems to control and monitor climate, energy, and plant growth in specific plantings, which may helps to grow a variety of plants in Tibet.

3. BabyLegs, 2017-19

I like it because the design is smart and simple. The materials and tools are so easy to find that people can make them at home.

Most of the plastic in the world’s oceans is less than 5mm in size, which makes them part of shorelines, underwater environments, waterscapes and even food webs. This makes micro plastics an environmental justice issue, since people who eat Marine mammals or rely on fish for food are more likely to carry a high toxic burden.

I think the BabyLegs shown in the museum is a bit small, which makes it less efficient.

Here is my design:

Part 2:

This interesting plant inspired me, which is Codariocalyx motorius, also known as the telegraph plant, dancing plant. This plant has linear lobules on both sides of each leaf. When the temperature is not lower than 22, especially under the sun, it will dance rapidly according to the oval track and also has sound sense. When a song with a volume of 35-40 decibels or music with a certain rhythm is sounded, it can also dance. The dance grass is an erect small shrub plant, up to 1.5 meters. Stems single or branched, cylindrical, glabrous.

I think this plant is very cute and special, because I feel it is very spiritual, as if it can communicate with human beings. I heard about it several years ago, and I really want to keep a pot, but I didn’t find where to buy it, so I gave up.

I choose man itself to combine both the physical and non-tangible properties of my natural piece. Then I chose the Codariocalyx motorius (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Codariocalyx_motorius)as my nature inspiration, I will focus on it’s dancing ability.

Codariocalyx motorius can dance associated with temperature sunshine acoustic codariocalyx motorius lobular dancing because petiole on either side of the base of sponge tissue with a sensitive response to light at room temperature light and no wind and rain conditions, codariocalyx motorius linear lobule on either side of the blade will keep swinging, every piece of lobular can finish elliptic motion in half a minute time, back to its original position after rotate 180 degrees, and continue to roll, when the sun temperatures began to rise, the plant body moisture to evaporate speed, sponge expansion, lobules are swinging The stronger the light, the faster the movement, until at night all the leaves droop and are closed for sleep. When the sun goes down and the light gets dark, the leaves droop and close and stick to the branches.

What if we applied their biology to a dress that the fabric can dance.

During the day, under normal temperature and bright light and no wind or rain, or when the sun starts to shine and the temperature starts to rise, the dress moves. At night, it can also dance with the sound of 35-40 decibels.

Action-based Assignment

The event that I attend is Emergency Action Against NYPD and MTA, which is on Friday, November 1, 2019, at 5:15 PM – 7:30. Location: McLaughlin Park,TILLARY St, Brooklyn, New York 1120.

As an international student, this experience is very impressive. I didn’t have many expectations before going there, although I think we are doing the right thing, I think what we have to do might just be showing up and walk a little.  This is my first time in the protest demonstration. I personally experienced the strong energy of the people of New York.

Such a protest demonstration is very fierce and interesting. I even thought about whether this would be less secure, but give an action, speak for yourself is great.  “ Take it to the street, and fuck the police! No justice! No peace! ” This is my most influential slogan. I heard everyone shouting, and I later shouted with them unconsciously.

I support their claims. Life is equal and everyone should be treated equally. All in all, I think the protest march can be because it is a good opportunity for more people to pay attention to it.

The Festival of New – Anna Sui

This event is a conversational lecture with Anna Sui and Paul Goldberger, The New School University’s Joseph Urban professor of design. This event is on Friday, October 4, 2019, 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm and it’s located at U100 University Center.

The reason why I chose this event is that Anna Sui is a fashion designer I know and she is also our alumnus, also I’m curious about her personal story and how she made everything since I know she was born into a Chinese immigrant family in Detroit.

After participating in this event, I think it did meet my expectations, Because I actually didn’t expect too much before I go there, but I think it was quite helpful for me to be a fashion designer after. Many of her critical insights made me think a lot. I remember she shared how she gets all the inspirations for her fashion collections. She captures every detail of life. She will take inspiration from her trip to Greece with her nephews. She believes that inspiration is everywhere. You never know what will surprise you and you might even come up with some ideas when you go to the Duane Reade.

She thinks that the speed of fashion is too fast nowadays because it used to like a trend gradual arc but now is so much quicker. People start to not being patient for the six-month cycle, they wouldn’t want to wait six-month to get the clothes, they prefer to do see now buy now. She said when everything is too immediate, then it’s not meaning anything, it’s too throwaway.  I really agree with her point of view, and I think that’s also how fast fashion comes. The accelerated pace of fashion iteration and the reduced time and cost of buying clothes greatly shorten the life cycle of fashion and highlight the ecological damage caused by fast fashion. Therefore, maybe we should make a conscious effort to change it.

I think this event is beneficial to me. She taught and inspired me a lot, and she let me know that the fashion industry seemed healthier in a time when there was no fast fashion. I think to reduce the ecological damage of fast fashion, consumers can also make a difference. Consumers can resort to recycling. The best way is not to be brainwashed by consumerism. Use our wallet and your actions to keep up the environmental pressure on fast fashion companies.

The museum of regenerative urban space New York Response Writing

My experience of going to and MoRUS with Bill Dipaola is very good overall.  The museum of regenerative urban space (MoRUS) is a non-profit museum. It Chronicles the history of community gardens, shanties and grassroots environmental activism on New York City’s lower east side. I think this field trip is a very good experience, there was a lot of information about this area, and it helped me to know New York City better, especially the history of East Village. People put a lot of effort to make the environment of this community better and better. They never gave up and they showed us the amazing result if everyone is united to protect the environment.

According to Bill Dipaola, the first thing I learned is that we should remember history. His passion and love for this environment of this community influenced me, even though sometimes he is not very organized and he speaks a little bit too fast for me.

The gardens Bill took us to see were also very special. The maintenance of the park was not perfect, and many environmental protection facilities were not very impressive at first glance, however, when I learned that all the work was done by volunteers, I think people here are very conscious to protect the environment around them, which I think is so great.

He shared lots of his own experiences since he has always been part of many historical revolutionary activities. Before that field trip, I have never heard about things like biking formations, police involvement, and garden demolition. People should attach great importance to the radical struggles of cyclists in the past, which are often forgotten by people.

These histories are very interesting to know and also remind me of everyone who has contributed to the community in the past, every neighbor and artist who lives here did their best to protect this place, which gives me the motivation to do something for the environment. Therefore, the parks that Bill showed us made me feel very it’s very meaningful because after knowing the history, everything seemed to be really hard-won.

I also feel people should take more care of the environment around us and pay more attention to the city’s struggles with housing, public space, transportation because we can protect and create some amazing things.
