The Festival of New – Anna Sui

This event is a conversational lecture with Anna Sui and Paul Goldberger, The New School University’s Joseph Urban professor of design. This event is on Friday, October 4, 2019, 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm and it’s located at U100 University Center.

The reason why I chose this event is that Anna Sui is a fashion designer I know and she is also our alumnus, also I’m curious about her personal story and how she made everything since I know she was born into a Chinese immigrant family in Detroit.

After participating in this event, I think it did meet my expectations, Because I actually didn’t expect too much before I go there, but I think it was quite helpful for me to be a fashion designer after. Many of her critical insights made me think a lot. I remember she shared how she gets all the inspirations for her fashion collections. She captures every detail of life. She will take inspiration from her trip to Greece with her nephews. She believes that inspiration is everywhere. You never know what will surprise you and you might even come up with some ideas when you go to the Duane Reade.

She thinks that the speed of fashion is too fast nowadays because it used to like a trend gradual arc but now is so much quicker. People start to not being patient for the six-month cycle, they wouldn’t want to wait six-month to get the clothes, they prefer to do see now buy now. She said when everything is too immediate, then it’s not meaning anything, it’s too throwaway.  I really agree with her point of view, and I think that’s also how fast fashion comes. The accelerated pace of fashion iteration and the reduced time and cost of buying clothes greatly shorten the life cycle of fashion and highlight the ecological damage caused by fast fashion. Therefore, maybe we should make a conscious effort to change it.

I think this event is beneficial to me. She taught and inspired me a lot, and she let me know that the fashion industry seemed healthier in a time when there was no fast fashion. I think to reduce the ecological damage of fast fashion, consumers can also make a difference. Consumers can resort to recycling. The best way is not to be brainwashed by consumerism. Use our wallet and your actions to keep up the environmental pressure on fast fashion companies.
