LP6: Fabric in Fashion at the Museum @ FIT

The FIT Museum’s exhibition is a great celebration of the FIT Museum exhibition: FIT Museum 50 years, FIT Museum was founded in 1969, was the name of FIT design laboratory and gallery, the FIT Museum has held more than 200 fashion shows in the past 50 years, each The exhibitions are all very different from each other.

The most exciting theme of the exhibition is the fairy tale exhibition held in 2016. From the fairy tale exhibition, there is a Comme des Garcons red Robin Hood inspired ensemble, from the spring/summer 2015 series, which is amazing. I remember seeing it at the Vogue fashion show, I was completely fascinated by this piece. The whole series, Comme des Garcons, is a dark and twisted fairy tale in the spring and summer of 2015. The key word for this series is James. A revenge game of the world, roses and blood. The way to show this piece is a mannequin with arms open, and I even got a sign of liberation from the posture, almost releasing her power. It reminds me of the last scene when Carrie released her power.

The mannequin next to the Comme des Garcons show is a red cloak, made in England from the end of the 18th century. Comparing these two parts is almost like seeing how fashion becomes a translation tool, and designers get inspiration from ordinary objects and turn them into art.

Q-Tip shell

The original inspiration is from the art pieces I saw at the exhibition, because I think it is very interesting that these rough looking necklaces are made out of soft materials, and that is why I want to use fragile materials to create the same style.

The function of this necklace is decorative,  you can wear it anytime, anywhere you want, because it shows your aesthetic, and this necklace is very inclusive it is not designed for specific gender.

The materials I repurposed is using Q-Tips that I found in my bathroom, I bought them long time ago, and I always overlook at it and forgot about it. After seeing the exhibition, I really started to look at things I always forget about.

I learn about to be more careful about my daily life, to look at things I do not look at normally or overlooked.

What I learned about the materials is people should be thinking outside of box when it comes to materials.

The most enjoyable part of the project is to expand my imagination, and not restricted by the materials.

The challenging part is to make the Q-Tips be more stable.

The part I am satisfied with is when everyone in class came to my table and try to wear it

I learned about how I would think more outside of the box.

Summarize and elaborate on your comparison of one of the artifacts with one artwork outside of the exhibition in one paragraph. Your independent research should add to this paragraph.

The creator this Night in the City necklace is Joyce J.Scott, the artist is American, he made this art work during 1990.  this necklace is made by glass and metal beads, PVC, photo and laminated print, synthetic suede, nickel silver on thread, wires and monofilament.

The second art piece I choose is the two standing nude figures that is made by French artist Auguste Rodin, during 1911, in Phidias, California. The media of the figure

First we’ve sorted out the material that we brought and then we’ve talked about our views on jewellery. Many times jewellery may have some function, some meaning or some memory. However, our group believes that not all the jewelleries need to have a function. Jewellery is like the last thing to finish up your outfit. You can use your own space to wear them and give them different lives.

Jewellery is a very diverse concept since it lies in the eyes of the beholder. Different ethnicities have different interpretations of beauty. Beauty is a kind of feeling. Different people will have different feelings towards different colleagues from different perspectives in different times. Therefore, different definitions of beauty are also produced.

For me, in a word, jewellery is the comprehensive feature of artworks that can arouse people’s experience, arouse emotions and give people positive energy in time or space.

My idea is to use some cheap and unnoticeable materials to create a uniqu jewellery piece.

WRITTEN REFLECTION

Project title: Androgyny

1. What was the original proposal idea and how does it relate to your seminar research paper?

The original proposal idea is to express my opinion of future of sex, For my seminar research paper  I wrote about Gucci, and the brand’s take on sustainability. For me Gucci is very androgyny, and for the aesthetic of this project, Alessandro Michele’s works at Gucci really inspires me.

2. What is the intended function of your design, and what is the intention of the transformation?

The function of my design to make a statement of liberation, it is a statement of how we should be more inclusive about gender and sex. The transformation of sex, and break the stereotypical standards for genders. The transformation is to break the gender role.

3. What materials were used? Where did they come from, and what was repurposed?

I use cotton, and elastic, I bought them from Mood Fabric, I repurposed the fabric that I bought in many ways. I manipulated the fabric, I folded the fabrics in many ways.

4. How did your project change over time?

I changed the design of the top. The original design was a tight shirt with pearls. However, I changed it into a pleated tube top to match my skirt, because when I was making my pleated skirt, I found different folding and sewing methods can create different pleat style.

5. What did you learn about fashion/design, sewing & construction, and about yourself during this process?

I learned how to do pleats, I thought it is very easy, but it is actually very difficult. I did a mens underwear, so I learned the construction of an underwear.  During my process I feel like I love making statements and sending my voice out to the world, what I made is not fitted, and it does not have a literal function. I feel like this projects enlightened me and it is a very good beginning for me.

6. What would you do to improve the project?

I would like to work on my constructions more, I feel I can not make what I want to make.
