Intro to Fashion: Aphorism

According to the reading (Christopher Breward’s aphorisms from his foreword to Fashion Studies),

there is one part where examples of aphorisms are described.

Fashion is made manifest in material forms. It demands study in the same way that ancient artifacts are made meaningful by archaeologists: through careful excavation.

I agree with this aphorism because I think that fashion repeats itself. Like history repeats itself, what people wore in the past become popular again in modern days. Because fashion is made manifest in material forms, it can be repeated. Also each element of fashion have meanings and each have unique stories belong to them. So this can be described as archaeologists studying and excavate carefully. Fashion is something physical that have to be carefully studied with attention.

In addition, there is another part saying,

Fashion is gossip. Never underestimate the power of gossip. Semiologists are driven into ecstasies of supposition by its whispers.

I truly agree with this one because fashion is all about famousness and how people think about them. If there was no gossip about fashion, then the world won’t have any famous design brands such as Chanel, Hermès, Louis Vuitton, and etc. When people see one of these famous high-end brands with logos on it, they know it immediately. Also, people gossip about these brands and they also want to be mentioned along with their brands’ bag so people will keep buy them and gossip about them. Not only the design and uniqueness of the brand is important, but also becoming the center of what people gossip about is another important factor in order to survive in this fashion industry.
