MoMA exhibition- Items: Is Fashion Modern?

Richard Nicoll x XO fibre-optic dress

Rei Kawakubo, Comme des Garcons x Ensemble Spring/Summer 1997 Body Meets Dress-Dress Meets Body Collection Stretch Polyster

The stunning piece from Richard Nicoll completely matches my definition of beauty. The dress is formed by the collaboration between wearable technology company XO and Disney. It is a great combination of modern technology and traditional sewing techniques, further a symbolization of the new shift in modern fashion industry. When I first looked at the piece, I was drawn to its amazing effects and it also changed my traditional thought of how a garment should be formed. The usage of fiber-optic fabrics give new meaning and function to the fashion and the technology world. I have to say, the dress was beautiful in a way that was shocking to my minds and also completely inspiring. In my opinion, for something to be recognized as beautiful, it has to have 3 qualities: enduring appealing, emotional related and relevant functional. It’s a garment that fulfills all these requirements. However, the second dress, which is created by Rei Kawakubo and Comme des Garcons, lacks of a practical function in daily life. While the surprising forms protruding beneath elastic fabrics are creating a pleasing and interesting look, the weird shape of the dress makes me wonder whether it can be a representation of beauty in the reality world.
