Beauty Container: The Pandora Box

Initial Brainstorming

I have always had passion with music and I think people with musical talents can be recognized as beauty. So, I first came up with the idea to create a box that has a small band in it. The box represents a person. When you close the box, you can only see the person’s outside with his or her appearance and I decide to paint it all white so there is not any visual clue for this person. When you open the box, you start to really know this person and understand what is in his or her mind. In this way, it prevents any possibilities that this person is judged by its appearance, instead what is in his or her mind really connect with others and impress them. That also matches with my definition of beauty that real beauty grows from the soul and can affect one’s heart. However, this idea got killed, because I thought only creating a band inside the box doesn’t necessarily shows the power of human minds and the so many interesting souls in the world with diverse talents. Therefore, I revised my initial idea, and came up with “Pandora Box”.

  Design Concepts

The basic design concept of the box is to mimic the experience when you first meet someone, but you cannot get any clues of him or her without looking into his or her inside. The box can be any strangers that you meet on the street. The box is painted in plain white, which means to hide this stranger’s appearance. Therefore, you cannot judge him or her just by the outside, which it’s a easy prejudgement everybody makes in daily life. There will be nothing outside you can go reference of this person, your impression of him or her remains with a question mark “?”. That’s also why I name the box “the Pandora box” to establish this mysterious feeling you get when you first see the box. Then, To really know this person and decide what kind of person he or she is, you have to open the box, which in real life it symbolizes a deep knowing process of him or her. Then, you may find his or her surprising talents that impress you and make you think he or she as a person is beautiful. Therefore, your impression of him or her remains with a exclamation mark “!”.

I think this box really well establishes my definition of beauty, because it symbolizes the concept that you cannot judge a person just by the appearance but instead you have a take a look of his or her inside. I believe, real beauty grows from one’s soul. There are so many easy forgettable beautiful faces, but only a few loving, caring and stunning souls that are appreciated and worshiped by people for generations. Nowadays, we are reaching forward to a much more fast pace generation, which abundant of information on social medias just throw on us. I think, it’s essential to keep our aesthetic eyes and be able to differentiate what is vulgar and what is elegant and noble in the inside.
