Color Palette and Textile Board: Feminism Embedded Into Colors and Materials

Final Color Palette and Textile Board

While I was doing brainstorming about what concepts in 21st century fashion world are most likely to be associate with feminism and what elements are considered to be representation of women power, some powerful women figures popped out in my minds such as Hillary Clinton, Rihanna and Beyonce. I tried to figure out an element, a connection in their clothing styles that symbolizes women strengths and independence. From Rihanna’s daily wear, I figure oversize hoodie, trendy sports sneaker and exaggerated dark color make-up to be her way of expressing her powerful side. However, this differs in the case of Beyonce and Hillary Clinton. Beyonce, also a really powerful woman figure, wears less formal, but still pretty feminine dresses with less make up in daily life. Not to mention, Hillary Clinton, the first female candidate to be nominated for presidency in 2016, shares a total different dressing style also is recognized one of the most predominant feminist leaders in 21st century. So, there I was struggling it seems it’s hard to target a style of dressing that can be immediately defined as powerful. Then, a miracle insight hit me–female superhero’s power suit. As a Marvel fan, in the recent years, I discovered that more and more female figures started to show up in Marvel superhero series and their power suit are all accepted and recognized by the public as a deliver of power and strength. Therefore,  I found my greatest source for my color palette and textile board. The elements in Marvel female superhero suits are the most common feminist traits that I can find in nowadays fashion world. I decided to really study the structures, materials and colors of those suits and see how this it related to modern aesthetic standards of revealing feminism in fashion. I believed the outcome will be pretty interesting and definitely inspiring to the next steps of this project, for example, illustration and textile.
