Reflection on Christopher Breward’s Aphorisms from His Foreword to Fashion Studies

“Fashion is not necessarily spectacular (though it often conforms to the theory of the society of spectacle), it can also be demotic, ordinary, mundane, routine and humble, It is the stuff of the ethnographer and the anthropologist.”    -Christopher Breward

Fashion is when clothing comes alive to interact with one’s personality and instinct and is then bestowed stylized distinction and meaning out of specific individuality. All different kinds of body forms, and unique souls reflecting a specific time period forms the expression of fashion at that time. Fashion is really serving to whoever is wearing it, and a match of interests can make astound chemical reaction, releasing its magnificence on different kinds of people, including normal ones. I strongly agree with Christopher Breward’s aphorism for fashion to be “not necessarily spectacular”, but spectacular in a way that can incorporate all kinds and services all kinds.  I believe in meaningful nature of fashion, no matter it is expressed humbly or exaggeratedly on a specific body from. The ever changing aesthetic value and taste in fashion world can interact with time and leave great significance behind for people to taste and recognize through time.

“Fashion moves in space and time. It shares in the complexity of physics and mathematics, making patterns and networks, forming mazes and constellations. Through its forms we have an opportunity to re-unite art and science and to heal the rift of the two cultures.”

-Christopher Breward

In history, modern technology and fashion had always been two separate concepts. However, as a fashion designer that is also really drawn to math and architecture, I have dreamed for long to break this boundary between clothing and advanced knowledge in science. Why fashion can’t be academic high-end, cautiously calculated and research based?  Think of a way of building a 3D constructed garment that can illuminate itself and further penetrate through air. This appeared crazy thought from the past is now being executed in 21st century fashion world. The collaboration between Studio XO and Lady Gaga gave birth to the world’s first 3D sculpted, and self powering garment that can also achieve the function of a drone. We are seeing this gap between art and science becoming smaller and smaller, and it’s our responsibility as a 21st century fashion designer to open our eyes, practice broad ideas, expand creativity, and collide with existing boundaries and mindsets. We are the people that can redefine fashion in the new world.
