Wire Controller

Describe the general character and specific design features that led you to choose the object you chose to work with.

-I chose the Nintendo GameCube controller because of its unique design. It is a design I have become familiar with my whole live and I thought it would translate into a visually interesting wire piece.

Reflect on what your shoe or object choice might say about your identity in relation to your culture, and how, as a functional object, that object facilitates participation in a community of shared culture.

-This object is a big part of a sub culture of gamers. specifically those who play the game Super Smash Bros. This is one sub culture of gaming that I identify with more than most others. This specific controller is considered the gold standard when it comes to playing this game due to the button layout and size being optimized for the game.

Evaluate how you met the assignment objectives by describing the line quality or qualities used in your sculpture. Be specific, especially in explaining your strategy for employing cross contour to create structure. Discuss how you made decisions about how to use line direction/orientation, thickness, character, color, and how you laid out connections in your design.

-I found this object easy to draw and contour, but difficult to translate into wire. The form has very few, if any, straight lines or hard edges, and all the pieces are fused into one continuous shape. It was very easy to find where to put the cross contour lines because most of the piece has curves and curved edges. The topography was also an interesting challenge due to the button and joy stick lay out. I found this, with my skill, too difficult to translate into wire, but I made sure my drawings were crisp.

Describe what linear material besides wire your chose to include in your sculpture, and why you chose that material. If you only used wire, explain why you did not choose to include another material.

I did not choose to add any other material because I did not find it necessary. I could tell with some pieces, such as a shoe or purse, where another material could be used, such as a shoelace or a purse strap. There is not really a different sort of linear material that could’ve been used for my, rigid, plastic controller.

Describe something you would do differently if you could make your sculpture again.

I would honestly pick a different object to replicate. I found it very difficult to find ways to interconnect the wires in a way that best showed the form of the controller. This coupled with my never having worked wire before made it difficult. If I were to make a better version of the controller I would have needed more time.

Identify an aspect of your work that is particularly strong.

I believe that the concept and uniqueness of the sculpture were strong. Even though I found it difficult I am happy with how it eventually turned out.
