The Shed – Diller Scofidio + Renfro

What is the Shed?

  • The shed is a cultural institution that houses art, performance and music
  • The space allows for cross pollination of all disciplines of art.
  • There are 8 levels and its a 200,000 square feet
  •  its position against the indented side of DS+R’s residential tower.
  • The shed is created by a static building (from the structural-steel, glass, and concrete-base building of the Shed)
  •  is covered by a retractable shell, that creates flexibility for the buildings use.
  • When deployed out the shell can create an indoor and outdoor experience. The curtain wall used on the shell can be folded upward similar to a garage door. Allowing for a completely open space, or a closed space that is thermally controlled when closed.
  • the shell rides on tracks with elephantine slowness and grace, and, fully telescoped out, at 17,000 square feet, it doubles the footprint of the base building.

The building is performance in itself. An instrument to produce art.

How does it move ?

  • Kinetic system- rails at the base, wheels at the base, drive system at the roof
  • 273 feet of rails , welled on site

Facade

  • made of ETFE – polymer,
  • Similar to a sail. Bring to the site rolled up and attached to the frame, then inflate layers. It absorbs tension caused by weather easily
  • Framing – vertical columns that go straight down, other columns all go towards the wheels
  • The Shed is a Crane allows you to pick up large sculptures , suspend things from the ceiling.
