BRIDGE 1 STUDIO [Inquiry]
Bridge 1 is about inquiry and using inquiry to feed research and visualization.
In the seminar you will turn at one another in your inquiry to conceptualize spaces of joy, freedom, and empathy. What do these notions mean to you? What are the shared understandings of these notions in your small group? How can these understandings and meanings be turned into a series of formal decisions about material space?
In Bridge 1 you will visit Union Square (in class with Malgo) and collect 5 digital images related to her thought prompt.
For Seminar – Your deliverables will consist of a map of Union Square (in response to a prompt) and a group conceptualization of one of the spaces and a short assigned text.
For STUDIO:
You will complete a reflective writing component based on your observations in Union Square and post it to your ELP. You will also work on developing some questions based on your observations. You will produce one image/ visual representation for each of 5 questions.
You will produce a series of visualizations based on the internal noticing of the experience of simultaneous perception (after reading the Hess article, visiting Union Square, and completing your noticing exercise).
Bridge 1 is due in Studio on 7/16 – There will be a guided DAI crit..
Readings related to Inquiry:
Tony Hiss, “Simultaneous Perception”
Denielle Elliot and Dara Culhane, “A Different Kind of Ethnography”

BRIDGE 2 STUDIO [Context & Investigation]:
On your own you will collect a total of five images of advertisements around New York City.
You will then post these five images with class hashtag (#is2b2) to instagram with a geotag. (You may choose to post to an Instagram account you already have, or to a new one. You must turn on location services for this assignment. If you are not able or willing to use location services, or if you don’t have a smart phone, please email Carrie for an alternate posting location.)
Next you will choose one photo of an advertisement from the class collection of photos – this is all of the photos with the class hashtag. You will go to the physical site of this photo and observe the advertisement, taking in placement, speculating on target audience, message, and come up with a list of questions you have about this advertisement (post to ELP tagged both Seminar and Studio, and post links in Canvas assignment in Seminar).
Based on our readings of the politics of presentation in visual culture, you will create your own catalogue of formal strategies at use and the politics behind them (the meanings they produced), in the advertisements of your choice. You will choose one site in your neighborhood to analyze the visual culture using your catalogue.
For Seminar – Your deliverables will be a catalogue and a short text.
For STUDIO:
PLEASE collect and hashtag your images by midnight on Wednesday.
The investigation leads to iterative making – the re-imagination of the ad. You will create three adverts based on the reinterpretation & redesign of a found advert. These ads will be photographed and posted to your ELP tagged for Studio, and the link posted to Canvas in Studio. (Carrie will give directions and expectations for this.)
Bridge 2 is due in Studio on 7/23 – There will be a guided Crit. Carrie will explain how this works in the B2 Assignment and Expectations Guide.
Readings/ Viewings related to Context & Investigation:
Berger, “Publicity”
Goffman, “Gender Commercials”
Underhill, “How to Read a Sign”

BRIDGE 3 STUDIO [Interpretation & Argument]:
In Seminar – You will present a report on your findings about your neighborhood to date. You will have a chance to apply your thinking about collections, displaying, categorizing which you develop in studio, in a context of your research.
Your deliverables will consist of a written report, data visualization, and a presentation.
For STUDIO:
Visual Catalogue – Cabinet of curiosities – artifacts of each source.
In Studio, you will be thinking about collecting/collections, displaying and categorizing, as seen in cabinets of curiosities. After exploring your research topic through inquiry, and gathering sources, you will create a cabinet of curiosities – as representation of your research. You will be required to create artifacts from both Secondary Sources and Primary Sources. Your artifacts for Secondary Sources should be visual reflections or interpretations. You will do a minimum of 4 visual responses for Secondary Sources. For Primary Sources – you must include a minimum of two Primary Sources that are visual. You may include them as reproductions, or you may do a representation of them.
The total number of curiosities in your cabinet is a minimum of 6 as specified above… but can be more. You will also have to design and create your cabinet.
Additionally, you will be paying attention to your presentation. What is the methodology of display and organizing principles that you have intended?
You will also be completing process documentation and posting to your ELP, tagging Studio, and posting to Canvas (both for Studio and Seminar).
Bridge 3 is due on 7/27 (This is a joint class.) – There will be a guided Crit. Carrie will explain how this works in the B3 Assignment and Expectations Guide.

Spradley, “Asking Descriptive Questions”
