Down Memory Lane

My Story

I woke up excited because I waited for this moment for about three months. I was mostly overjoyed, but the nervousness slightly crept in. We weren’t going to meet until later in the day. I was anxious to see him, although there was no need to be. I meticulously chose what to wear and how I applied my makeup. It wasn’t out of vanity, but that I wanted to make an effort to be my best for him. My heart was beating out of my chest. When I saw him on the street, I couldn’t help smiling and gave him the warm embrace I’ve been waiting to give him. The nicest surprise was when he held my hand.

Combined Stories

While talking to Pernilla and Vi, we talked about various ways to intertwine our stories. Originally, we were going to have Pernilla pass by my ending scene where I’m holding hands with another person. Due to time constraints and circumstances, we altered it so that Pernilla and I talked to each other on the phone. On my journey to meet my friend, we discussed having me pass by and help Vi during her panic attack. We thought this was the best way to represent individual as well as shared time.

Process

The overall process of this project was quite extensive. Filming scenes alone was quite difficult because I found myself reshooting many takes. Propping up the camera on a tripod to film yourself was more time consuming than I thought. I enjoyed shooting the parts of my apartment that I felt set the mood of my location. The natural noise was an appealing factor too.

After filming my own scenes, we had to shoot some scenes with Vi and I. Those were obviously easier in the sense that we had someone else recording and directing us. Later that day, we had to find time to edit the whole footage due to an unfortunate event. We agreed on the idea to introduce the short video with natural sound from the actual footage and gradually transition to Vi’s piano piece.

There was this comparison to how I got ready for my day and how Vi got ready. During Vi’s panic attack, we overlapped a delayed version of the same clip and decreased the opacity to give a slowed perception of time. With her abrupt cuts, we were aiming to give the viewers a peak to what she was feeling. The music was slowed down to match the overall ambiance. With my clip hugging my friend, we slowed down the clip slightly to emphasize the moment and happiness. For Pernilla’s ending scene we used the more dramatic part of the song to emphasize the memory. That was along with overlapping clips to give the illusion of a flashback.
