Sustainable System: Natural dye

The raw material I used for this natural dye experiment is the grape I bought from the grocery store. I didn’t notice that they were not in season when I bought them. Its harvests from May through October, and by September it’s time for peak production. Choosing a fruit that is not in season to dye means less sustainability because of the additional chemicals used.

There are negative control and positive control for the natural dye. The negative control is undyed and unwashed. The positive control is dyed and unwashed.

The fabrics used are wool and muslin.

The chemicals used for the natural dye are ferrous sulfate heptahydrate, soda ash, dry alum, potassium hydrogen and coke.

Original dye: pH=7 Light purple

ferrous sulfate heptahydrate pH=4 brown

soda ash: pH=11 green

dry alum: pH=3 dark pink

potassium hydrogen: pH=0 hot pink

coke: pH=4 light brown
