Project 5 Week 3 Check-In

At this point my group and I have formulated a concise idea of what we want to accomplish with our zine.

We want to make three iterations of the zine:

  1. A documentary zine, that prompts you around the rest of the exhibition/space – working to supplement the work of our peers
  2. A zine of prompts. I have been exposed to several different books with a prose oriented format that can act as directives in making art, taking you out of a current mind space, providing allegories for human experience.
    1. Grapefruit by Yoko Ono
    2. Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino
  3. An imagery zine, similar to the second zine but using imagery rather than words.

On Zine 2 and 3

  • We discussed at length how we as a subset our class could come together and make content filled zines that felt deeply personal.
  • I brought forward this idea of prompts and prose. If mental health is anything it is a series of prompts, even stagnation is a prompt.
  • Mental health is a system of prompts that guides us through our lives.
    • So how can we as a group work to manipulate this idea of prompting and how it formulates/directs narrative(s) in our lives.
    • We can combine both scenes that may take the mind of anxious or depressive situations with directions or actions to take to move your mind
  • We have started a group google drive folder about the Zine documentation
    • There all of our ideations and work is being collectively chronicled
  • We have begun writing dozens and dozens of prompts
    • The final number of prompts is yet to be determined but we are trying to, as a group, create as many, that are meaning to us, as possible and then edit down from there

Moving Forward and Materiality

  • Brittany has already begun to spear head things on the material side
    • she (and Jenny) work at the Print Shop and have the ability to access and use the various different tools of the Shop and the Book Arts room – where we can find free booking/zine materials to put to use here
  • I have gone to several paper stores (I specifically found interesting paper at a stationary store on 18th street between 5th and 6th avenue) to see about interesting papers we may be able to put in use to add one more dimension to our content
  • Our next step(s) definitely involve
    • narrowing in on the imagery we desire
      • and creating/curating that imagery
    • continuing the write the prompt
    • making mock-ups of the zine
      • experimenting with different kinds of printing, binding, and formatting
    • making sure people are putting forth documentation of their work from the rest of the class so we can consider how the first – documentary zine – can be structured.
