Project 6: Sonic Portrait of a Space

Time & Composition: Project 6

In this project, we are going to create a space by only using sounds. We used recording equipments, mp3 files, Adobe Audition and sketches, and this project is also related with Project 5.

Testings before Project 6 (learning process & feelings): https://portfolio.newschool.edu/kaylees/2018/10/17/project-5-sonic-analysis-of-a-song/

In these two projects, I learnt to use Adobe Audition, and I also learnt how to record sounds, how should the sounds be like, and last but not least, how people imagine space by only listening to sounds. After creating drafts and testings, I found out that it is interesting if you put sounds recorded in different space together, sometimes the actual sounds cannot present the actual space/thing. So I decided to make up sounds by myself.

The space I decided to create is in a park. There’s a bee is flying through people, trees, and lends on a coke can, at last, it went inside the coke can and drown in the soda. My audiences will follow the journey of the flying bee, experience the feelings of the bee and imagine how the world is like from the perspective of a bee by only listening to my final work. There’s the sounds of the wind, two-feet “monsters” talking, the noises in the park and the interesting bubbles in a can. I also drew a few sketches before I decided.

My sketches & notes:

Processes:

I recorded sounds when I am walking on street, there’s the sound of wind, people talking and walking. I also bought canned coke to record the sounds of the bubbles in the coke can. However, the sounds of the bubbles are too weak, I can barely hear my records, so then I decided to make up the sounds with my mouth. And it is so good. Amazing. So I also tried to create sounds of the bees, and they works. After I edit my work, the buzzy sounds of the bee actually popped out of the background music, which is successful.

Final work(mp3):

Thank you for listening!
