Time in a Grid

“Time as a Restraint”

In 29 photographs and 7 blocks of both rich and understated color, I explored the idea of time as a restraint. In a non-linear narrative, I captured several images of various degrees of restraint: when time is in excess, when it’s limited, when the entire day is free, when each hour is scheduled, and everything in between. These photographs range from moments such as taking a second to look out of the window for relief between chapters upon chapters of reading, to other simple restraints including the closing times of public places. I also included the more dynamic moments that are made possible when people have free time, such as a serene night in with face-masks and movies or even the bursts of hysterical laughter that’s inevitable when people are surrounded by their close friends. The disparity between the intensity of the color block hues further emphasizes the difference that excess time can make in anyone’s life, and the rich red color is echoed in some of the pictures depicting excess time. The sporadic placement of these color blocks displays the unpredictability of time, and its contradictory element; even though 4:00pm will always come at the same time each day, the hours leading up to it can determine how that hour is spent, and unexpected events can often completely alter whether or not excess time is available.
