Written Reflection on Course Approach: Drawing and Imaging

How do you plan to approach this class?
I plan to approach this class knowing that my skills in photoshop/illustrator and such are limited, but also aiming to change that. In the future I wish to create more digital drawings and go beyond my comfort zone in which I always resort to graphite when given a choice. I also plan to use the stressed caused by being so overwhelmed last semester to force myself into managing my time more effectively. This way, I can (hopefully) create better work that is more inspired by a vision than a deadline.

What you would like to get out of it?
As mentioned above, I want to feel comfortable using Adobe software to create artworks, and to create more digital drawings. I also struggle with getting proportions right in the portraits I draw, and it often takes me a very long time. Hopefully this will improve over the course of the class. I’m also generally excited to have a new set of classes and to see what Parsons has to offer me next. Last semester I could feel myself making strides and improving over time, and I hope to continue making progress as an artist and a student.

How would it best serve you?
Honestly, if I come out of this class having learnt anything— even if it’s just how to complete work I hate without procrastinating— it will be worth it. Ideally, though, I’ll become more confident in what I already love to do (graphite drawings) and also gain some skill in other ways. Recently, I’ve been designing tattoos for friends and I’ve struggled with coming up with individual and unique designs, and I hope this class will help me visualize my ideas better.

How will your college experience serve you?
I like to think that college has already taught me some difficult lessons about independence and just how much I took for granted at home. I never want to stop learning how to organize my time and push myself into a healthy and productive routine every day. Aside from this, though, I want to see how much I can grow as an artist. Although it gets on my nerves at times, I’m glad we have the learning portfolio to force us into documenting every step of every artwork. This will make it so much easier and impactful to look back on any progress.

How will you engage your class to seek out learning?
For my studio class last semester, I found it so helpful to constantly be around other artists. If I had been starting at a portrait for too long, I can’t see that I made her forehead way too small. My roommate, however, can point that out to me at first glance. I could then ask my other roommate who might tell me that her lips are placed a little too low down. This has been such an instrumental part of getting more done more quickly (and while staying slightly more sane). I hope to continue these types of interactions through which I can help and collaborate with other students.
