I went to two stores, the Lion Brand Yarn Company and Home Depot. I wanted to focus primarily on fibers of different textures, thicknesses and purposes.
My first material is silk yarn. It’s a fine type of yarn that when put together is lot similar to some sort of netting or mesh. It is completely manufactured in the USA. I think it could be used widely throughout the fashion industry to make various garments. In my project I could see this material being used as a fastener of some sort because its so fine and delicate. It isn’t an overwhelming fiber, that would take attention away from the overall piece, but that could be used intricately in a design.
My second material is Angora Merino yarn. It’s a thicker but light (in weight) wool that is chunky and takes up a lot of space. Being made of 80% Extrafine Merino Wool and 20% Angora, it is manufactured mostly outside of the States. Its used a lot in makings of rugs and wall hangings. I think in my project I would used it create some sort of base for a wall hanging, macrame carpet of some sorts. Then would come inlay it with various other fibers to make it more dynamic and interesting.
My third and last material is twisted Polypropylene rope. It’s an extremely dense and heavy fiber that isn’t necessarily easily malleable. However its extremely sturdy and can hold shape for long period of time. Its most probably used heavily on construction sights because it has the ability to withstand the weight of 700 lbs. I would use this to make a large scale (hanging) piece that would have lots of knotting and shape in it.
