Bridge 3- Multiple Perspectives

Curatorial Memory- God Save the Anarchy (1970s London Punk)

My group consisted of me, Zoe, Mackenzie, Ty and Oliver. We decided to choose the 1970s London Punk movement, focusing on the punk youth during the time and the effects the 1970s UK governement and socio-economical situation had on shaping the attitude and purpose of the Punk movement.

ABOUT THE PROJECT-

CONCEPT-

The concept of our exhibition was to explore and portray how each of our artists shaped the punk movement through their medium of message. Each of our artists was influential in the punk movement in their own unique way and allowed us to see the movement from different perspectives across a range of art forms.

I believe our presentation was quite successful as we were able to provide a significant amount of accurate historical knowledge and chose a good variety of artists that each contributed to the movement differently yet are still connected. Although, all together our presentation was rather cohesive but it would’ve been even better if we organised the order of artists to create a flow/ transition throughout the exhibition.

My artist, Vivienne Westwood, is known as the punk queen. Westwood was one of the pioneers for this movement and one of the biggest influence behind the visual aesthetic of the punks. It is fascinating how well she was able to translate and embody the punk movement through the form of fashion. Moreover, it is interesting to compare Westwood approach to feminism through punk and Margaret Thatcher, also known as the ‘villainess of the Punk movement’.

GROUP AND ME-

My role in the group was to work on my section panel and to help make the poster- I made the vector of punk Margaret Thatcher for our poster. I think our grouped worked really well together, despite one of our members being off sick for some classes, we still managed to organise and communicate everything effectively. We would each share our ideas for different parts of the project (e.g. title, concept/thesis, designs, etc.) and give suggestions to come down with an agreeable idea that everyone is satisfied with.
