Knowledge Bank-What is a constructed environment?

An environment is a place where all living things such as people, animals or plants can live and interact. Environments are made to create certain experiences. Constructed environments for example are a man-built environment that has been created in order for humans to function in their day-to day life activities such as working, living, socializing and more. These include buildings, houses, parks, roads, community centers, etc. On the other side, real environments consist on spaces that have not been in any way modified by humans and have remained intact. These are spaces where species and natural resources interact. It has animals, plants, soil, water, different climates and more. Yet, some humans exploit real environments in order to satisfy our basic needs. The difference between the two is very clear. Different environments convey different experiences according to where you are and what’s the purpose of their function. If you want to experience tranquility, peacefulness, etc., real environments provide people with that sensation. However, constructed environments give individuals more opportunities to experience different social scenarios, such as going to the movies, theatres, eating at a nice restaurant, etc.

  • Why are constructed environments built in certain places? Is there a way of making them more sustainable?
  • Do constructed environments encourage overpopulation?
  • Is there a way to incorporate both nature and man-built environments in one that is sustainable, accessible to opportunities, but tranquil and peaceful?
