Project 1a: Underlying Patterns

Project 1b: Color studies, focuses on creating a series of patterns and adding color to them in order to create depth. Maintaining the original pattern will make each pattern unique in its own way.

First,  we had to create 9 monochromatic patterns in any way we wanted. They could be created by repeating the same form or creating a design were the same form is repeated but can be placed horizontally, vertical, etc. For this project, my focus was primarily geometric shapes because I believe it is interesting how you can play around with the forms and create unique designs. For example, the pattern bottom left, was the first one I created. At first, all the shapes where circles with lines inside them, however, after playing around with them, I ended up with the pattern at the bottom right, which is a completely different design.

Moreover, just like above, I found inspiration for patterns from different things. I first found inspiration by looking at the works of a Peruvian graphic designer, Elena Izcue. She collected textiles from cultures from the past like the Nazcas, and converted them into special and outstanding modern designs. Also, I looked around my environment, and found inspiration from rugs, floor patterns, and more. Any form and any shape can be transformed into anything you want. For this project I used illustrator because it is much easier for me to play around with my ideas and not feel committed to something. I let my ideas flow and see where they take me.

For the first class presentation, I didn’t have all of my nine designs ready because I missed the first week of class and got an extension.  However, I had most of my designs ready to share.

These designs had some annotations that cannot be seen in the picture as they are individually written in a copy of each pattern in the bottom left pattern of the image.

These are the 9 monochromatic patterns I created:

1. Lines&Dots. Thin and thick lines, repeated pattern, overlapping. Lines coming out of dots, in groups of 5.

  2. Triangles. Some mirrored. Diamond shape, triangles inside triangles. Design every two triangles, forms in a diagonal. Black and white circles. 3. Lines, diamonds, tones. Geometric shapes inside geometric shapes. Two line division.

 4. Lines going every direction. Hexagon, star, arrow, triangle. Thin & thick lines. Repeated pattern.

  5. Fingerprint inspiration. Repeated overlap.

6.Dots, dots, dots! White on black and black on white. Circles in space. Big, medium, small, tiny, etc.

 7.  Mirrored and reflected squares going to the center. From big to small to the middle.

8. Lines, boxes and shapes. Lines groing/pointing to two directions. Optical illusion. Geometric figures pointing different directions. Hexagon inside squares.

9. Thin triangles. Mirrored black and white. Contrast. Black triangles on white background and white triangles on black background.
