One of our first Sustainable System’s classes was visiting the various sites of a group of environmental activists, one of the very few, located in Manhattan. We learnt all about the different ways in which these people are contributing towards a healthier and more environmentally friendly lifestyle and especially being in New York City. The gardens around the city that they had to fight for in order to keep going, the rooftop gardens that they would create in order to produce organic foods, the water harvesting systems for fresh water and the chickens of course, were all just some of the things that these hardworking people fight for in order to keep their beliefs and ideals going, even if it means fighting the government and the police. However, one event in particular, that really stood out for me in particular was when the large storm in New York happened, and these group of activists came up with the most creative ways to solve the issues that the city was facing. They generated electricity through cycling and prepared food for the neighborhood because of the leftover food that could have could have went bad. It was very inspiring to see the hard work and dedication that these creative people put in, in order to keep standing in what they believe for and what they believe could be a better place for everyone.
