LP Post #1 – Christopher Breward’s Aphorisms

After I read Christopher Breward’s Aphorisms, I pick two of them that I can mostly agree with. the first one is
“Fashion can be confirmation, of self and others. But it is also about anxiety, ambiguity, and worry. As an aid to understanding psychological complexities, it is unsurpassed.”
I agreed on this aphorism because of my fashion aesthetic and own idea, which is fashion is protection from uncomfortableness, so people wear anything comfortable for them to wear. It is not about physical comforts, and people want to be comfortable in a psychological way. To me, some Comme des garcons pants are not very satisfied with my body, but it makes me feel confident and feel better than that I wear comfortable pants from Uniqlo. Therefore, on the other hand, fashion could be worry to me. Sometimes I try to fit into a group of people by social motivation. Such as funeral, we have to worry about our look to not be odd.
The second aphorism is
“Fashion does not define. It is instead a term that demands definition. ”
This is what I would write in the first question of the lecture class if I knew this article. I think this aphorism is genuinely right to me. Fashion does not define. There is no definition of fashion because fashion means different to every single person. To me, fashion is a fascinating tool to communicate, but for some people, fashion does not mean the same as me, and fashion has a background of each person. It contains cultural, historical, and very personal context is always in their style. Even about my fashion style, there are a lot of things going on, and it changes by time by time. I am from Japan and lived there for more than 15 years of my life, so I got a lot of influences from Japanese culture, and in the past few years, I love to listen to Rock music, and I also got a lot of inspiration from that. My fashion is created by what I am always thinking and what I love all the time. These are just two most significant factors of me, but there are thousands of more elements to create my fashion identities.
