DS4 – Week 1 – Reading Response

January 24, 2022 - Design Studio 4, Year 3

Reading Response:

After reading both of the power, what I thought of the most is about how powerful the media and pop culture is, and how this can shape how most of the general republic think in a certain way. From the Paragraph of Sia’s “Music” that misrepresents autism in women and girls, to the idea of using hashtags on social media such as #auctuallyautism, it is all about the amount of information being spread and also the popular media that holds the power of this effect. ” The world is designed for people who function differently than us, namely the non-autistic ‘neuronormative’ majority.” once said in the article from teen vogue. These days, 65% of the population has regular access to the internet, and for most of these people, it’s in their pockets, which we have no idea what is the source of the popularized data and who is the person that are controlling these minds and ideas. “Oppressed groups themselves should be at the forefront of shaping social change. This is because only the group themselves have lived experience and truly know what it’s like to live within the oppressed group.” However, from this sentence, I can understand that it is also hard to change everyone’s belief since oppressed groups are not the majority, while it is hard for them to access the major source of information. The media’s problem is there will always be one voice speaking louder than the other, which is an ongoing war that was constantly shaping the truth of ideas in society. After reading this paragraph, I found out that it is just really important to investigate and research more about the minority groups that each of the individuals we care about. Sharing our experience of investigation is certainly more powerful than following or being influenced by the trend of popularity and stereotypical ideas that will somehow exist in society.
