The Yellow Lady

For our second Visual Communication assignment, we were asked to find an illustration that spoke to us, whether it was from the colors, or the style and form. I found this illustration in a fashion book at The New School library, and there was something so striking about all of the bold colors. (Unfortunately there was no indication of who drew this piece, and I would just like to emphasize that this is not something that I have done.)

With this illustration, we were then asked to try and recreate this piece. My usual media of choice is markers, but I decided to step out of my comfort zone and attempt water colors.

I chose not to recreate it exactly. The words weren’t ‘speaking’ to me, and my colors were different shades than the ones in the actual illustration.

Along with this recreation, we were told to create a piece in a style of our own choice, and create an entirely different composition.

I really wanted to emphasize the voluminous sleeves and the billowy dress. I wanted the eyes to start at the girl’s head and end at her huge pink hand. I wanted there to be movement in the piece, and movement in the eyes of the viewer.

Assignment 3

Our next step in this project was to recreate our recreation of the original illustration in photoshop.

It was hard to recreate watercolor but once I got the hang of controlling opacity it became easier.

Step 2 of assignment 3

After recreating our recreation in photoshop, our next step was to once again create a different composition using different tools and effects in photoshop.

I was really attracted to the woman’s head in the original illustration, so I decided to cut the head off in my recreation of the illustration and split it in half. Originally I wanted to have something coming out of the inside of the head, but I thought it would be cool to show the face melting. In order to complete the entire composition I incorporated different colored lines that extends from the left side of the page to the right. I’m never usually bold with color so I’m happy I got to try it out with this project.
