Initial Research + Final Project Ideas

Consider how your personal life has changed over the past 2-3 weeks,

How have your actions and choices been practices of long-life design?

I always have a habit of taking a thinking process before I purchase any clothes. However, I don’t usually think before I buy any other things especially food. Nevertheless, after learning about long-life design and sustainabilities, I started to have a new habit that to think before buying anything, and starting to see sustainable as part of my responsibilities. However, with quarantine and COVID-19, the process messed up a little bit, because I need to learn a new skill of how to store a good amount of food for myself. I would say that I am not doing a good job at it because some of the vegetables that kept in the refrigerator turned dark before I finished.

How have you taken more care about what you use?

I would say that I am trying very hard to take more responsibilities on the resources that I have. Before the quarantine, I didn’t have so much time to pay attention to things that I owned at home. I wouldn’t clean them as often as I am now. I am also organizing and throwing so broken things away. However, as I mentioned before, I am ordering a lot of delivery food. So I feel bad for wasting and using so many plastics and materials.

Have you had moments of deep appreciation for something that you might not have noticed before?

Yes, I appreciate so much of the system based on the food apps. I realized that there are gigantic people and resources that are evolving when I am only clicking a button at home. I feel bad that I can only stay home all the time, but there are still people out there doing delivery jobs, cooking food, and planting, etc.

Have you had to repair anything?

Something that is relating to repairing is that I would refrigerate the leftover food and cook for my next meal. I haven’t done it before the quarantine.

Have you had to make materials/resources last longer (food, toiletries)?

Yes! I intended to make everything that I own last longer since resources are so scared and hard to get right now especially any furniture and housing materials.

What systems connections (communication, transport, food, physical, etc.) are you newly or differently aware of as a result of COVID-19?

I am newly noticing that hospital, corpse disposal, cemetery, and the land is so closely linked. At the same time, I am just realizing how deeply people’s faith, belief, and hope are closely connected with economics because the US stock fused four times.

What new fears and or/appreciations do you have for systems connections?

My new appreciation that I have is that people’s motivation to live is so major to economics and humanity. So, I think everyone should take this as one of the responsibilities to promote cultures, beliefs, and anything wholesome.

Do you feel any of your daily life practices have changed for the long-term?

My daily life practice might be changing that to cook for myself as I am realizing how damaged it is to eat delivery food.

What have you observed in the world around you, how has broader culture has changed, including your field of study?

The most interesting thing that I have observed is that people changing their attitude rapidly from hating each other and having biases when COVID-19 is not affecting themselves yet, to supporting each other when they are all in this together.

What practices have you observed that enable Long Life Design — actions that support things to last? What have you seen repaired, refused, taken care of with intentionality?

Something that I believe will enable long-life design is that everyone should keep in mind about not wasting and buying products that can last longer. Consumerism would be one of the major reasons for wasting.

Given your observations and realizations from the questions above, what would you like to create as a final project and share with others through the medium of your Major?

I would like to create a booklet or a mini sculpture.

What are at least two final project concepts/project ideas) that you would like to potentially create? A book? A map? A garment? A game? A photo series?

  1. I want to create a booklet for everything that I owned at home. I will be documenting everything about them and would probably draw a small picture of them. I want to as well record the day that they are arriving at my home and the day that they leave my home.
  2. The other thought about my final project is to create a sculpture of people living under a huge plastic bubble.

What Long Life Design practice/action are they about?

The long-life practice for my first idea is to appreciate and record my resources so that I will be more cautious and taking more care of my resources.
