Dress Practice Log

The dress practice log was an interesting experience. For seven days, I did a consecutive week Saturday to Friday, I had to log my dress practices and reflect upon them. This assignment reassured things about myself, because I was already very aware of my dressing habits and the reasons behind them. I knew I had a go-to, basic outfit formula, which is t-shirt (or sweater if it’s cold) + jeans + sneakers (or boots), and for the expanded version add a leather bag (real and/or fake leather and it’s most likely black), a pair of sunglasses (my favorites at the moment being the blue mirrored ones), and a jacket which depends on the weather, although I do play favorites. Of course there are many slight variations and substitutes that can be made, but this formula is the foundation of my daily dress practices. I know that I have favorite items that I wear multiple times a week. I know that sometimes I’ll “dress up” and wear something slightly more effortful for fun, but also depending where I am going, that I secretly am trying to impress people and look cool. What was the most interesting to me was thinking about the subject positions that I activate with my dress. It is not something I usually consider while getting dressed, but it makes sense when I take the time to think about it. My dress practices are a cultivation of all the parts of me: gender, age, location, class, sexuality, etc. and that can be seen daily.
