Bridge 1: Reflection

– What was the most challenging aspect of this bridge project for you?

The most challenging part about this bridge project was trying to figure out what my gift to New York was. It took me awhile to figure out what I wanted to do for this project and what my gift was. At first I wanted to talk about my dad and my past and I was very persistent on that concept but changed it last minute because I thought it made more sense and just fit the assignment more.

– Did you find anything surprising throughout the making / conceptualizing process?

I found out that sewing doll clothes is not as easy as it looks! I thought it would be a lot easier because they’re small and you don’t have to work with that much, but in certain circumstances, it was the opposite. Sometimes it was harder because they were so tiny and if you added layers it would be thicker and harder to get the needle through.

– What were some things you will take away from the feedback you received in crit?

A few people told me that I couldve added more to the piece, such as an accessory or packaging. I do agree that it does look a little incomplete and that it would be much better with more to it.

– What do you think was successful about your piece?

I think my way of portraying the hanbok on the barbie doll was the most successful part of the piece. I wanted to show the audience the struggles of growing up as a Korean-American in the U.S. and I was successfully able to do that by creating my own barbie hanbok dress and presenting it on a white doll.

– What do you think was unsuccessful about your piece?

I think the stitching on the hanbok could’ve been better. It was difficult to sew a doll outfit without a sewing machine but during certain times hand sewing was easier, like when i had to sew the cuff on the doll. The sewing machine would’ve been handy when sewing

– Would you change anything about the piece?

I think I would have added more to the project, whether it’s an accessory or packaging. I think each thing would’ve been significant in their own way. The packaging would put more emphasis on the fact that there aren’t many cultural backgrounds presented in little kids toys thus giving them the mindset that only certain beauty standards are socially acceptable and okay, when that really isn’t the case. I think the accessories would’ve showed the cultural aspects of the doll more, making it a bit more interesting.

These are the sketches that I made before actually creating the hanbok on the barbie doll.

This was the final project. I unfortunately didn’t take any progress photos which only left me with these.
