Rogier van der Heide: Why light needs darkness

“Some light can only appear because of the darkness of the building”. Rogier can der Heide talks about how darkness is equally as important as light. For some sculptures, buildings, construction of certain things, darkness is necessary in order for the art piece to work (such as the Notre dame stained glass building). We must take into consideration that without darkness light would be useless. Darkness helps us manipulate and use light (whether thats natural or made) in the way we want it to work. He also goes over how different color lights affect our mood and mindset. For an example, blue light helps us relax and he talks about how one day he would love to see light being used in hospitals to help others.

Introduction to James Turrell

James Turrell is an artist that made his artwork BE light. He used light to as a material to affect the medium of perception. He used light as his medium in his artwork which is a unique and interesting approach because not many people do that. They usually make sculptures or artwork that holds light or manipulates light but no one uses light as their medium. He depends on the weather or nature around him to make architectural light pieces, using light as his key point.

Hussein Chalayan: My life as an outsider
