Since there is not much culture in Snug Harbor today, since it is more of a tourist attraction than anything, I wanted to hone in on the culture that once existed. My documentary includes an interview with the curator of a museum on the grounds in which he speaks about the uniforms the sailors wore on site. He specifically talks about the straw hats the sailors wore in the summer. This struck me because I am in need of some summer right now so I decided to recreate that straw hat. I weaved the flags of the countries who may have had sailors at Snug Harbor into the weave of the hat. I used U.S., British, and Canadian flags because these were the countries that would likely have been allies to the U.S. and could have had sailors on U.S. ships. I definitely want to go back to Snug Harbor this summer to see it in its glory and I might just wear my new straw hat.
