Visual Narrative

Brainstorming:

The soundscape I created was an audio narrative that follows a day in the life of a psychedelics user, hence, I will continue exploring this concept further by highlighting the effect of psychedelics on a user’s visuals. I am going to use video to illustrate this narrative as it is the medium I am most comfortable in, and then I will heavily edit my footage. To aid my process, I did some further research on how vision is affected.

  1. Distortions in time perception
  2. Hallucinations: auditory, tactile, olfactory, and gustatory.
  3. Distortions to the way that you see things alongside very vibrant glowing colors (for example, some appear like an overlay or outline of geometric or swirling patterns, others are described as a change in the perceived size or shape of objects. Others can best be described as static objects appearing to move, such as walls appearing to “breathe.”)
  4. Synesthesia: occurs when stimuli that are typically perceived through one sense are perceived through another, such as seeing sounds, or hearing smells.

Storyboard:

I wanted to also bring this project back to me, and further explore the relationship of drugs to me. Drugs and their power remind me of the media’s power of manipulation, hence, I am going to be adapting images and videos from different media outlets and incorporating them into my project. I will aim to highlight how media has become just as powerful and dangerous as the use of drugs.

Inspiration/Mood Board:

Iterations:

Initially, I wanted to place the video in a green-screen TV but I found that was distracting from the video itself. Also, I didn’t have much of a plan as to how I will edit this video so I spent a long period of time experimenting with effects like; mirroring, distortions and glitches. I was neglecting the importance of color and eventually found myself mostly drawn to inverting the colors.

Final piece and statement:

URTV is a short film that explores the capabilities of media to influence one’s mind. In this piece, extracts from renowned pop culture films are borrowed in a manner that mimics the effect of psychedelics on one’s vision. The film narrates a day in the life of an individual, any individual, to further emphasize on the implantation of media into our lives. To further highlight this notion, the film’s soundtrack mimics the effect of psychedelics on one’s hearing.
